This is from a North Augusta photographer we discovered at an exhibit in McCormick, SC during our Hickory Knob trip. Mom actually surprised us with another one of his works, which I hope to post soon.

The Art of Recycling

Washington DC’s National Building Museum has a new exhibit with an old theme: obsolete refrigerators have been transformed into works of art that will be on display through September 2. The exhibit is a promotion by the Department of Energy for its Recycle My Old Fridge campaign. There will be 50 decorated refrigerators on display, and visitors can vote on their top model. The winners will be announced on September 2.

Take the Crayola Color Quiz

This is fun! I was surprised how many colors I remember. Many are still the same and quite more simple than you would think.

Yearbook Photos

Check out all of these yearbook photos of "me" from different years. If I had time, I'd label the years, but they're just as funny unlabeled. Do your own yearbooks photos at http://www.yearbookyourself.com/. Thanks, Roxanne, for letting me know about this! It's hilarious! (The funnier ones are the ones you AREN'T seeing!)

Because I have three egg cartons in my 'fridge

Here's a handy way to tell if your eggs are fresh.

Place an egg at the bottom of a glass full of water and watch what happens:

If the egg lies at the bottom on its side, it's fresh.
If the egg sinks, but with one end up, it's getting old but is still edible.
If the egg floats at all, you should buy some fresh ones.

This test is effective because eggshells are porous — over time they dry out, letting air in and moisture out.

Tell me I'm not being too stubborn

I just made an appointment a J. Thomas Salon, and it wasn't with Wayne, the fabulous hairdresser who has commitment issues.

As you remember, Wayne stood me up last haircut, and I found out that he has - ahem - issues. He regularly misses appointments, and even missed his grandmother's funeral.

Kenny cut my hair that day, but this time, I made the appointment with the owner, J.T., who has early hours. He can see me at 8 a.m., which means I can go on my way in and not have to take a lot of extra time.

He remembered me from last time, when I was stood up, and assured me that Wayne had straightened up and was on a short leash. But I told him that since Wayne hadn't even bothered to call, not even to this day, I was going to hold my ground.

I know J.T. is good. I just wonder if I'm cutting my nose (or in this my hair) off despite my face. Like, I'm "standing up" to Wayne, but maybe to my own hair detriment?!

Support, people. I need support. Am I doing the right thing? 'Cause I sure am tempted to give in and go to Wayne. Oooh, but I've done that so many times, with men and wayward hairdressers, that I think I need to stand firm.

Thoughts?

Can You Say IDIOT????

Just for the Record

I think John McCain blew Barack out of the water at that religious right forum. I agree more with Barack, but McCain was much more direct and succinct with his answers. Plus, I love that McCain mentioned Meg Whitman, eBay's CEO, as one of the three wisest people he knows. And he DIDN'T mention his wife. Oh, I forgot. McCain was able to hear the questions beforehand...

Peekie

I know we don't share nearly enough cat pictures - the dogs definitely get more face time - but we took these recently, and I thought I'd share. (As you can tell from the number of postings today, I'm spending a lazy Sunday Blogging, and not much else. I love lazy Sundays.)

This is Pikachu. He was rescued from the basement of a church by the USC Law School. He likes to pick on Dutchess, lick underarms and eat paper and cotton fabric. He is a nutty buddy!

No good pictures of Dutchess. Because she's jet black - she doesn't photograph as well. Her eyes always glow. I'll try to get some of her soon.

Hair Today!

I had a perfect hair day ealier this week and tried to take some pictures of it so my soon-to-be-new hairdresser can duplicate the style. Sister ran across these over the weekend and got a big chuckle out of them. I told her that next time I'd wake her up at 6-something a.m. so SHE could take them for me!

The two that drew the most laughs!

Then to the "cut off the top of the head" series.

These are the only two that may even be remotely usable, and that's pushing it.

But no matter what, I won't go back to Wayne, who STILL hasn't called to apologize for standing me up!!

Mary Elliott's Birthday

This weekend, we celebrated Mary Elliott's birthday at Mom and Dad's house. Click here for the 411; we posted it on Gramma's blog, The Red Headed Roadrunner.

Wii-iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

The sisters got their introduction to Wii this weekend.

Our friend, John Douglas, is using a Wii for his Eagle Scout project. He raised the money to buy two Wiis, and will use them to teach Babcock Center clients how to bowl. Then he's going to take them to a real bowling alley.

He installed a Wii at Mom and Dad's house to test it, since he has two younger siblings at home, and as his father, Scott said,"If they see it, we'll have to buy a Wii for our house."
So, the sisters and Mom stood in for Babcock Center clients and learned how to use the Wii.

First Beth.

She was good. She even scored some strikes.

Then me.

Finally Mom.

It was fun, but I think we would've all fared better at the bowling alley. You don't have to press so many buttons there.

Is Anyone else Old Enough to remember Wacky Packages??

I was so tickled to see this today on CNN.com.

I used to LOVE Wacky Packages! I recently saw some at Walgreen's and bought several packs.

I KNOW He's Hot, But...

...planting the placenta in an orchard? Makes me think of the time he was arrested for playing the drums naked while high as a kite. Good looks can only go so far to eliminate the freaky factor.

Mini-Makeover

This weekend, I did a mini-makeover in my room. I created a new headboard from an old fireplace mantel and moved my Breakast at Tiffany's picture - thanks, Jackie - above it. I still have a quite a few things to do - that's why it's just a mini-makeover - but I made quite a bit of headway today.

As for the headboard, I actually hung it with industrial-strength Velcro. Really. I heard that tip on HGTV or some such place. Apparently, it's a designer short cut. Ingenious - worked like a charm!

P.S. The bad thing about having a black cat is that you can never get a picture without her looking like an alien!

A Devine Day

Sister and I had such a fun day! It stared out rough - we both woke up with bad headaches that stuck with us most of the day - but we worked through them.

First we went to Starbucks, where our friend, Tom - the executive chef at Garibaldi's - brought his precocious daughter, Gabrielle. We had a ball hearing her tell us about their chocolate lab/"basket" hound mix, Molly, who is expecting puppies soon. Before the morning was over, she and Tom went home and brought Molly to Starbucks. PRECIOUS pup - she looked like a chocolate lab with short legs.

Afterwards, we went over to Stein Mart, and found some great stuff. Beth was looking for a bracelet and some sheets, and we found both quickly. She also found a great gift for our friend. Kayren, who is in town for a visit this weekend.

But the big hit of the day was the Devine Street Sidewalk Sale. It was a cool morning - for August anyway - and we had a blast shopping. The biggest find was at Pout, a cool cosmetics store. I hit the motherlode of lipsticks - my weakness - on sale, big time! I got T. LeClerc, Tarte and Sue Devitt lipsticks for $3 or less each. Siser also got some Sue Devitt mascara for $3 that is usually a lot more expensive. And checking the Web sites with the colors we bought, they are all current. (I should've bought extra and sold them on eBay.)

We also got some fun deals at Handpicked. (Check out the Handpicked Web site with the tri-color jewelry on the front page. It's true that everything comes back. I remember when I worked in a jewelry store in college - in the mid-1980's - and the tri-color stuff was all the rage. FUNNY!)
Tomorrow, we'll be spending the day with Kayren, who's in town on her way to Charleston.

A shout out to Ashley, who was fitted for her wedding dress today! Ashley, sorry we missed it - especially since our previous morning plans changed - but I know it was fabu. We expect to see pictures!

MP's Thoughts on John Edwards' Infidelity

At least he had an affair with a forty-something year-old instead of some 25 year old bimbo, young enough to be is daughter. (As a nearly 42-year-old myself, I'm a little sensitive to that one!)

And no matter who "the baby daddy" is - and I personally think it is John Edwards - I'm impressed she got pregnant at 42! I hear that's not such an easy thing for someone after their late thirties.

Gramma - a John Edwards fan since wayback - was devastated. She actually cried, and threatened to send back his book, which he actually signed. I know, because I sat through one of the longest, most boring political speeches in history to have him sign it. I even have my picture with him. I tol Gramma to give it back to me, that I'd save it for posterity or sell it on eBay.

I'm Addicted

Last night, I picked up a box of the new Banana Split Creme Oreos at the grocery store. All I can say is "Mmmmmmm!"

I had a few, but then brought the box into the office today so I wouldn't eat myself into a banana split coma!

It's really just an Oreo with banana creme - I don't know where the split fits in since there are no cherries, nuts or other accoutrements.

They're a "limited edition," so try them today!

The Carpool Is Up and Running

I started carpooling yesterday. It's a very small carpool effort, but every bit helps - both the environment and the pocketbook.

Our Collection and Recycling Center Coordinator, Tom, comes from Columbia NE and passes the Forest Acres exit every day. So we've designated Thursdays as carpool day, where we'll meet at the Wal-Mart and alternate driving to the landfill. Since Tom and I are both out and about a lot, usually in our own cars, it's hard to find a day where one of us doesn't need our car, but on Thursday, we both come in early for a landfill meeting, so we're making it work.

It was GREAT having someone to chat with on the way in and back home; both trips seemed much quicker than the usual 30-minute trek. We even talked shop and got a head start on the day.

Pearl Fryar's Garden Pictures, Finally

Okay, here are some of the better pictures from our trip to Pearl Fryar's topiary garden!

This isn't a topiary, but it was my favorite thing in the entire garden!

One of Pearl Fryar's cool pieces of recycled art.

Sister in the secret garden.

My favorite topiary.

I LOVE this picture!

It was in the Daily Grist today!

Give Me a Break!

Even if I THOUGHT this, I wouldn't say it. I bet this will get folks talking. I bet the first letter to the editor will appear in mere days.

USC trustee: Campus cops targeted athletes

One of the longest-serving and most influential members of USC's board of trustees believes Gamecocks athletes have been targeted by the university's police force.

Eddie Floyd, a Florence surgeon who has served on the board since 1982, said several months ago he was told that some campus police officers were overzealous in their investigations and arrests of athletes.

"I feel they have overstepped in some areas," Floyd said Wednesday from his home in Florence. "After talking to some of the people, this is how I feel. And I always say what I feel, good or bad."

Pearl Fryer's Junque Art

It seems to be taking me a while to post the Pearl Fryer garden pictures! I did post some of his "junque art" on the TRASHformations blog, so until the garden pictures are up, check these out: http://trashformations.blogspot.com/2008/07/pearl-fryars-junque-art.html.

Sisters Road Trip

For the second Saturday in a row, we road tripped to a little SC town. Today, we went to McBee to visit the Macleod "peach compound." We went with Gramma, Bob Medlock and Vivian Burnside. It was a hoot. Click here to see pictures.

Green Goddess

I'm featured in the August issue of Skirt as a "Green Goddess." The actual profile in the magazine is short, but the Web profile includes a bit more.

I'm most disappointed that they didn't mention TRASHformations.com, which they specifically asked about, but as they say, "As long as they spelled my name right!"

Special thanks to Sonoco Recycling for letting us do the photo shoot. I'm sitting atop a bale of office paper and beside me is a bale of aluminum cans.
